  • I rebuilt the candler blog and just took it live. A few words on the how, but mostly the why.

  • I have almost completely rebuilt the candler blog with Hugo. A few more adjustments and I should be ready to publish it fully. Maybe.

  • I haven’t joined Mastodon yet. Micro.blog so far has been the main thing I’ve tried outside of Twitter. I definitely like the idea of it but finding it hard to find things to do here. Should I post more? About what? These are the questions I wonder about.

  • Another top ten list, this time from the Cahiers du CinĂ©ma. Only four of these had a US release in 2022, but worth noting anyway.

  • Two more lists I’ve moved to Letterboxd only to be reminded I’ve barely seen any movies this year.

🎥 Manohla Dargis’ Best Movies of 2022
    🎥 A.O. Scott’s Best Movies of 2022

Both published together in The New York Times.

  • 🍿Richard Brody’s Best Films of 2022

This list feels unique. I’m guessing the deluge of year-end lists we’re about to see won’t have a lot of these. I’ve only seen 2.

Here’s a Letterboxd version of this list I made for easier tracking.

  • I think my biggest barrier to going all in on Micro.blog is knowing whether anyone is reading my posts. Still confused by this place, I guess.

  • I’m wary of an Indiana Jones film without Spielberg at the helm. Indy feels like Spielberg’s Antoine Doinel: just as the latter was for Truffaut, a reflection of the filmmaker at a moment in his life.

Also strange: the first of these without a story by George Lucas.

  • 🍿 Could Theatrical Movies Shut Out Streamers for the Top Oscars? ⇒

Kyle Buchanan for The New York Times:

Should streaming films be completely shut out of the top six Oscar categories, many will call it a comeback for theatrical exhibition […] But even if theatrical movies dominate this year’s best picture field, that victory will come with some complications.

Smaller, less spectacle-driven contenders have struggled to generate box office returns on par with prepandemic levels: “The Fabelmans” has earned a weak $3.6 million so far, while “Tár” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” haven’t cleared the $10 million mark domestically after weeks of release. Just a few years ago, those kinds of films would have at least doubled their current grosses. But the older audiences they rely on simply haven’t returned to theaters with any consistency.

The accepted wisdom that older audiences are the only people who see “smaller” films1 feels extremely outmoded. Box office numbers don’t lie, of course, but something feels totally off to me about it.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see where things go next. It feels like theaters are getting one more chance before streaming takes over completely.

    1. The Fabelmans is a spectacle, as is Elvis, mentioned earlier in the article, which did gangbusters at the box office. ↩︎

  • Where are the movie bloggers on Micro.blog? 🍿 I’m seeing a lot of Letterboxd posting and quick hits on movies logged. Anyone maintaining something more comprehensive? Longer reads? Would love to check it out.

  • Downloaded the latest Gluon beta and now Micro.blog is beginning to make a bit more sense to me. I think what’s been tripping me up is how many conversations from Mastodon are in the timeline. Being able to turn replies off is a huge help.

  • Still finding my footing around here, but overall, to my great shock and surprise in 2022, the web feels bright again. I feel like I’m back in 2007 again, trying out new fun tools and seeing if I enjoy it. Never would have imagined…

  • Short Explanation of Why I Can't Publish My Site 📝

Here’s a short explanation of why I can’t publish the candler blog right now.

The site runs on Octopress, which I had been building at my web host. The host went under and transferred everything to another company, at which point everything was fine for awhile (months? years?) until it wasn’t.

For over a year I haven’t been able to build the site, not even locally. Octopress relies on too many outdated dependencies, and even trying to transition it to vanilla Jekyll on a modern Mac is full of challenges.

When I made the jump to Octopress [gulp] a decade ago, transitioning to it from Wordpress was well-documented; tons of folks doing the same thing had published blog posts about their experience. I’m finding far less guidance these days for how to move to, say, Hugo, or back to Wordpress. This lack that I feel…that’s why I want to publish my site again.

I don’t know my next steps, and I don’t know if Micro.blog fits into that plan. But it feels good to put a few words out into the world.

  • For a variety of reasons, I’ve let the cander blog fall into a bit of disrepair. I have ideas to fix it or migrate it somewhere, but in the meantime, here to see what Micro.blog is about. đź‘‹
